Adamawa govt debunks false claim on killing of CAN chairman, says circulating video from 2020
The Adamawa State Ministry of Information and Strategy has dismissed as false and malicious the reports circulating on social media alleging the killing of the state chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN). The ministry clarified that the chairman is alive, safe, and fully engaged in his routine activities, describing the rumour as an unfortunate attempt to create unnecessary tension and panic among citizens.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the ministry expressed deep concern over the deliberate spread of misinformation, particularly a disturbing video being shared online and falsely linked to the alleged killing. According to the ministry, the video in question is not only unrelated to Adamawa State but is also an old clip from 2020 that documented an entirely different incident in another part of the country.
The government emphasised that mischief makers had taken advantage of the video to push a false narrative, urging residents to remain calm and disregard the fabricated story. The ministry reaffirmed that no such incident had occurred anywhere within the state, stressing that the security situation remains stable and closely monitored by relevant agencies.
The statement noted that security agencies have already commenced tracking the origin of the fake report, reiterating the government’s commitment to ensuring that those who intentionally spread harmful misinformation are identified and held accountable. The ministry warned that circulating unverified content, especially content capable of inciting fear or provoking communal tension, is a criminal offence under Nigerian law.
The ministry expressed disappointment that some individuals continue to weaponise misinformation at a time when the government is working tirelessly to promote unity, peace, and interfaith harmony across the state. It noted that Adamawa State has enjoyed strong collaboration among religious leaders, institutions, and communities, and that attempts to undermine this peaceful coexistence will not be tolerated.
Citizens were therefore urged to rely solely on verified information from official government channels and credible news platforms. The ministry encouraged members of the public to immediately report any suspicious or misleading online content to the appropriate authorities for prompt action, stressing that collective vigilance is necessary to preserve public order.
The government reassured the public that the state remains committed to safeguarding lives and property, while continuing to foster an atmosphere of trust between the government and the people. It added that protecting the reputation and safety of religious leaders, including the CAN chairman, remains a priority, as they play a vital role in shaping peace and stability within communities.
The Adamawa State Ministry of Information concluded by reaffirming its dedication to promoting transparency, accuracy, and responsible communication. It vowed to continue countering misinformation and propaganda swiftly and decisively, ensuring that citizens are properly informed at all times.
Residents were once again urged to disregard the false report, remain calm, and continue their daily activities without fear, as the CAN chairman is alive and the video circulating is a recycled clip from 2020 with no connection whatsoever to Adamawa State.
