Supreme Court slams renegade REC Hudu Yunusa Ari, lay waste to Binani’s appeal.
The Supreme Court rejected Aishatu Binani of the All Progressive Congress’ petition regarding the governorship elections in Adamawa in 2023. Hudu Yunusa Ari, the disgraced REC, unlawfully declared Aishatu Binani the winner of the Adamawa 2023 governorship elections while the results were still being tallied. Binani’s efforts to cajole the court to rectify the illegal declaration were rejected by the highest court.
The thorough and thoughtful decision of the Supreme Court has dispelled Binani’s illusions of winning the 2023 governorship polls in Adamawa.
With their resounding rejection of Binani’s appeal, the Supreme Court panels headed over by Justice Okoro made it quite clear that the returning officer is the only one who can proclaim an election winner.
As they alternated in criticising the renegade REC for unlawfully granting himself the power to announce a winner, the five-member panels reiterated our electoral system’s commitment to justice, fairness, and compliance with due procedure.
In reaching its decision, the Supreme Court clearly grasped the complexities and subtleties of the case. The court has preserved the primacy of legal processes and remained faithful to fundamental jurisprudential principles by painstakingly analysing the complexities of the case.
