EFCC Warns Of Planned Protest Against Commission

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has warned the public about a plan by a mysterious group to stage a protest against the Commission.

In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, the Commission said the group has been actively advertising on social media, recruiting gullible young Nigerians, including students, to take up “arms” against the EFCC in recent days.

It stated that the insidious campaign is being promoted in opposition to the Commission’s operational activities, including the enforcement of cybercrime legislation.

“While the Commission is not opposed to citizen protests, it is concerned by emerging evidence that suggests a grand design by corrupt elements under investigation or prosecution by the Commission to use the so-called protest to orchestrate a national uprising that could endanger our dear nation’s peace and security.

“As a responsible law enforcement body, the Commission would not allow any breakdown of law and order anywhere in the country, particularly near its office locations throughout Nigeria.

“EFCC, working in concert with sister security agencies, is therefore taking necessary measures to deal with possible threats to the peace and security of Nigeria,” according to the press release.

The Commission, on the other hand, urged parents, guardians, and heads of tertiary institutions to take responsibility for ensuring that their children are not recruited to be cannon fodder in a proxy war against the Commission waged by corrupt interests.

The Commission is fighting corruption and cybercrime to protect the country’s youth.

“If Nigeria continues to deteriorate as a hub for fraudsters, it will jeopardise that future,” he said.
