Updated:Felix Tangwami, Adamawa’s Commissioner for Health, convicted to three years in prison.
Justice Anka Abdulazia of the Federal High Court in Yola, Adamawa State, sentenced Felix Tangwami, the commissioner of health, to three years in prison for accepting and spending Goodluck Jonathan campaign funds.
According to the judgement, all the prosecution witness testified that they received call from Tangwami to come to the government house in Yola to receive the money ranging from 20 million and above
The Finder reports that, Mr Tangwami was Adamawa state chairman of Goodluck Jonathan campaign council in 2015
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) indicted Felix Tangwami under money laundering and fraud related offence act.
According to Justice Anka, the decision will dissuade public officials from using public monies for personal advantage.
In a judgement delivered via zoom penultimate Friday, Anka said, “I hereby sentenced the first convict, Felix Tangwami, to 3 years imprisonment on count 3 to 23, and the sentences will run concurrently,” the judge’s decision read.
A civil society organisation has called for the commissioner’s resignation, saying that holding public office is a criminal offence violates the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s constitution.
According to Pius Jacob, leader of the Egalitarian Society, Tangwami profited from the ruling since the judge decided to count his three-year prison sentence from the day he was arrested in 2018 to the present.
Given that the correctional institution has his details on file, Tangwami should resign as an ex-convict.
“He should resign before this damages Governor Fintiri’s reputation.”
A call was put through to Tangwami he admitted being jailed but will appeal the judgement.
