Resident Doctors Begin 7-Day Warning Strike
A seven-day warning strike has been initiated by the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) at all of its locations across the country.
The purpose of the resident doctors’ strike is to demand the return of Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, one of their own, who has been held captive for more than eight months.
The strike is scheduled to start at 12 a.m. on Monday, August 26, 2024, according to Dr. Dele Abdullahi, president of NARD, who made the announcement in a statement.
Abdullahi said that Sunday, August 25, 2024, was the day of the virtual Emergency National Executive Council meeting where the decision was reached.
He informed them that there would be no access to emergency medical services during the one-week warning strike.
Nearly eight months ago, Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, a registrar at the National Eye Centre in Kaduna’s Department of Ophthalmology, was kidnapped along with her husband and nephew.
In spite of her husband’s liberation in March, Popoola and her nephew remain captive.
Protests by NARD members demanding Dr. Popoola’s immediate release were held at all tertiary hospitals across the country a few weeks ago.
