Planned Strike: FG, ASUU To Reconvene on September 6
Academic staff union (ASUU) members and federal government representatives met on Wednesday to prevent a planned strike by university professors; they will meet again on September 6.
This was revealed in Abuja by Tahir Mamman, minister of education, who said that the government is collaborating with ASUU to devise strategies to resolve the disagreements.
In response to the lecturers’ concerns, he announced the establishment of a new executive within the leadership of the pro-chancellors.
In a similar vein, a joint committee has been formed by ASUU, the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission (NUC), and the Ministry of Labour to speedily implement all outstanding matters, especially those pertaining to presidential orders.
The minister stated that next week, the meeting will be called back to collect input and reports on the several stages of implementation.
Any employees on sabbatical, part-time, or adjunct appointments whose salaries have gone unpaid as a result of the IPPIS should have their specifics reported to the Ministry of Education by ASUU. The Ministry of Education can then forward this data to the Federal Accountant-General’s Office for further processing.
The varsity professors threatened to go on strike a few days ago because the federal government was allegedly not meeting their requests.
Averting another statewide sector strike and guaranteeing an upgrade in campus security were the principal objectives of the conference, which was originally scheduled for Monday but postponed due to its failure.
Mamman emphasised the federal government’s commitment to bolstering school safety measures, saying that they will persist in doing the right thing and keeping pupils on campus.
