Jega’s Committee Reports to Tinubu, Says Open Grazing, Ranching Can Co-Exist
President Bola Tinubu has received the starting report on Livestock Sector Reforms Implementation from the Presidential Committee on such matters.
On Thursday the committee turned in its findings to the President at State House Abuja.
Speaking to reporters soon after meeting with the President, Professor Attahiru Jega, Chairman of the Committee and former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), said the committee was able to pinpoint policies on how the Nigerian government might wisely exploit the cattle sector in Nigeria.
He disclosed that the 152-page report he sent to President Tinubu suggests policies the government should follow to help to reduce farmer/herder conflicts all throughout the nation.
He claims that the Committee’s stance is that stopping open grazing right away would go against a conventional pastoralist practice.
He pointed out that open grazing and ranching can coexist temporarily until sufficient awareness and infrastructure support the adoption of ranching.
The committee has recommended a ten-year strategy to help the government guarantee notable development in all spheres of Nigerian cattle.
The committee also advised Nigeria to embrace innovations for cattle farming.
Prof. Jega says the paper offers thorough direction on how the freshly appointed Federal Ministry of Livestock operates. President Tinubu recently declared this ministry.
To get further public comments, we want to shortly publish the committee report.
President Tinubu established the Presidential Committee on Implementation of Livestock Reforms in July to remove challenges to agricultural output and provide new prospects for farmers, herders, processors, and distributors in the livestock-farming value chain.
