NorthEast PDP Governors Endors Damagum To Continue As Acting PDP Chairman.
Ambassador Illiya Damagum, the embattled interim national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), may have survived attempts to remove him from office, as the party’s Northeast PDP governors forum has rallied behind him.
Some PDP governors decided that a party leader from a north-central state should fill his position.
Humwashi Wonosoiku, Governor Fintiri’s chief press secretary, quoted Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, speaking on behalf of the six states, as saying they are confident in Damagum’s leadership since he took office.
“Fintiri, citing a Federal High Court Abuja restraining order, stated that Damagum shall complete former Chairman Dr. Iyorchia Ayu’s tenure unless the court rules otherwise.
Fintiri hailed Damagum for restoring public trust in the party and urged members to follow the court’s decision for the sake of both the party and democracy.
The governor, who hailed the party’s achievement in the North East region during the 2023 elections as unprecedented at all levels, stated that the zone is more deserving of the job of National Chairman than any other portion in the North.
The Federal High Court in Abuja issued a restraining order, prohibiting the National Working Committee, Board of Trustees, National Executive Committee, PDP, INEC, and affiliates from changing, nominating, or appointing any Chairman other than Ambassador Damagum.
