The Labour Party’s (LP) 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi thinks President Bola Tinubu should lead by lowering the cost of running government.Governance Cost: Tinubu Needs Show Leadership Says Obi

This was said on Thursday morning by the former governor of Anambra State during a news conference he had in Abuja concerning the situation of the country.

Obi said Tinubu should tour national educational institutions and local hospitals to determine the degree of improvement in the healthcare and educational sectors of the country.

Obi said that public debt under the current government has skyrocketed due to the degree of corruption still present in Nigeria and the expenses of government. Unlike the present borrowing for consumption, he underlined the need of tying borrowings to initiatives promoting national development.

According to him, government officials purposefully misused public money in 2024 via frequent international travel.

The LP chieftain advised the president to once in a while drive to experience the appalling condition of public roadways.

Obi remembered how he obtained the road contract after driving President Olusegun Obasanjo from Awka to Onitsha as Governor of Anambra State.

Obi denounced the widespread poverty that has resulted in stampedes for palliatives in some regions of the nation as the new minimum pay has not helped to address the local hunger issue.

Declaring the security situation in the nation regrettable, he also said Nigerians die needlessly from banditry, terrorism, and kidnapping.

He advised Tinubu to spend festive seasons in other areas of the nation to feel the suffering of the people since he is no longer the governor of Lagos State.

Obi argued that tax should be a function of productivity and that if most Nigerians live in poverty, the government should first make Nigeria a profitable country before taxing the people. The tax reform proposals must be extensively debated.
