Autonomy: ALGON urges LG chairmen to approach CBN for documentation.
Local government areas across the country are poised to receive direct budgetary allocations from the Federation Account.
To that end, the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, or ALGON, has advised all council chairmen across the country to visit a Central Bank of Nigeria, or CBN, branch near them right away to complete any outstanding documents and procedures.
ALGON clarified, “This is a sequel to the operationalization of the local government account into which the monthly revenue allocation from the Federation Account accruing to local governments will be paid to give full effect to the intents of the Supreme Court judgement.”
The directive, cited by journalists in Abuja yesterday, was in a written message to the chairmen dated March 5, 2025, and signed by Mrs. Evan Enekwe, ALGON’s acting director general.
It continued: “In compliance with the Supreme Court judgement of July 11, 2025, which granted financial autonomy to local government councils, I am directed to inform you that the CBN has graciously opened accounts for the 774 local governments and area councils in Nigeria.
“To activate local government accounts opened by the CBN, individual councils must follow due process and protocols, including ‘KYC’ scrutiny by the bank. To fully implement the Supreme Court judgement, the local government chairman must visit the nearest CBN branch to complete all outstanding documentation and procedures for the operationalization of the local government account.
This account will receive monthly revenue allocations from the Federation Account. Your prompt compliance is requested; please accept the greetings of ALGON National President, Engr. Bello Lawal.”
