2027: I’m Only Interested In Coalition Against Hunger, Poverty- Peter Obi

Amid growing rumours of a possible coalition among opposition leaders to unseat President Bola Tinubu in 2027, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, says the only coalition he is interested in is one against hunger, poverty, and Nigeria’s deteriorating healthcare and education systems.

Obi, who paid a visit to the Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Kubwa in Abuja on Monday, underlined that he was not looking for any position. “The only coalition I am interested in is one that is fighting hunger, poverty, and the country’s poor healthcare and education systems.

“I am not looking for any job,” he replied. Obi finished third in the 2023 election, trailing President Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and many believe a coalition of him, Atiku, and other opposition parties will defeat Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

The former governor of Anambra State rebuffed a contract to run as a vice presidential candidate in 2027, stating that people who claimed he had agreed to deputise anyone were engaging in selfish politics that were destructive to the country’s future.

Obi also donated money to a school project in the diocese. He claimed that because the government had failed miserably to provide free and high-quality basic education, the church had been forced to carry a heavy burden. Obi was spotted with former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi exchanging pleasantries with President Tinubu following Pope Leo XIV’s inaugural Mass at the Vatican on Sunday.

In response, the former Anambra governor stated that he was not an opponent of the President and just treated him with the politeness that tradition expected in Rome. He underlined that the only opponent he has are corrupt officials who have made life difficult for Nigerians.
