2027: I’ll run on Labour Party’s platform, says Peter Obi.
Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has told his followers that he will run in the general election in 2027 on the party’s platform.
He made the assurance when speaking to a group of teenage followers in a 7-minute, 16-second video posted on the party’s WhatsApp network on Saturday.
Obi highlighted to his audience that what appears to be an internal issue in the two main opposition political parties—the Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)—has the government’s fingerprints all over it.
Obi stated in response to a query about which platform he intended to run on in the 2027 elections, “I will continue to run for the Labour Party.” I am a member of the Labour Party.
While responding to another question from a student who was concerned about Obi’s apparent aloofness towards the LP’s crisis, the former Anambra State Governor stated, “What is happening in the Labour Party and the PDP is caused by the government. Please quote me wherever.
“We’ve experienced a problem in our party previously. Yar’Adua was the President. I went to him, and he phoned the INEC Chairman (Prof. Maurice Iwu) and said, “I don’t want any problems in any party.” We were compelled to repair it.
“However, there are issues in all parties right now. These are system-caused difficulties. These are some of the things I would like to clean up if I had the opportunity.
“Parties will function very well because you can’t have a system working without a strong opposition.”
He urged Nigerians to take responsibility for ensuring that their votes are counted, stating that even if political parties pay agents to look after their interests, voters make the final decision on whether or not their ballots should count.
The LP standard bearer urged Nigerian youngsters and the electorate not to be discouraged since beneficial change will be opposed by those who benefit from the existing order.
He also mentioned that, in his opinion, politicians seeking public office should retire at a certain age.
Obi stated that he will be 65 years old by the time the 2027 election takes place and that he does not want to contest elections in his 70s.
