Tinubu approves release of ₦2 billion, 20 trucks of food for Mokwa flood victims.

President Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate disbursement of ₦2 billion to rebuild all residences affected by the flood in Mokwa, Niger State.

Vice President Kashim Shettima said this during a visit to Mokwa following the tragic flood that claimed lives and property and displaced hundreds.

The vice president further indicated that the president has ordered the immediate delivery of 20 trucks loaded with food to the victims.

Shettima assured the people that President Tinubu’s heart is with them and promised that any issues impacting them will be resolved.

According to him, the president has also ordered that the affected bridges in the area be restored right away.

Regarding drainage, Shettima stated that the president had also directed the immediate reconstruction of drainage systems in Mokwa town.

He stated, “The president has already directed the minister of state for agriculture to relocate to Minna for the next week to ensure that the 20 trucks of various food commodities are delivered to this distressed community.”

“Most significantly, we must discover windows of opportunity to reconstruct people’s lives and hope.” The Federal Government will spend ₦2 billion in collaboration with the Niger State Government to rebuild homes destroyed by the flood.” Human life cannot be reimbursed.

“This is why the president is very empathetic, very worried, and very concerned about the plight of the hundreds of thousands of our people affected by this disaster.”

“Most importantly, we’re on the ground. We’re going to rebuild the bridges. The federal government, led by President Bola Tinubu, has already directed the federal minister of works to immediately begin reconstruction of the four destroyed bridges, which serve as a lifeline—actually, a major arterial road connecting Nigeria’s south and north.

“So it’s our collective responsibility to see that we rekindle hope in our people for a better tomorrow,” according to the vice president.

On Wednesday, May 28, 2025, a flood devastated communities in Mokwa, resulting in the recovery of more than 200 dead.

Ahmad Suleiman, the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs in Niger State, stated that attempts were still underway to recover more.

“We have about 200 casualties or corpses and are currently seeking more. As of now, we are still recovering corpses.

“Nobody can tell you the number of casualties in Niger State right now because up until now, we are still looking for some corpses,” Suleiman told reporters Tuesday.

He stated that the state government had triggered an emergency response to distribute relief goods to displaced flood victims who are sheltering in improvised camps.

“The Niger State Government has put things in place, and there are many contributions from many departments and ministries. The damage on the ground is currently inaccessible via social media unless you visit the scene. There is a lot of damage right now.

“The state administration has dispatched trailers full of rice to the victims.”The governor’s wife also visited the local government yesterday and donated N50 million,” he added.

However, the victims affected by the flood expressed discontent about the handling of relief operations.

Many displaced individuals have continued to lament the terrible state of the temporary shelter given to them and the lack of access to supplies, especially food necessities.

One of the victims, Mama Isah, said, “We are 17 people in my household, but we were only given one loaf of bread and some tea. “How can that be enough for our breakfast?”
