Democracy Day: We must Embrace Democratic Values—Gov. Fintiri
Adamawa State Governor, Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri CON, has congratulated Nigerians on the 26th anniversary of unbroken democracy.
The governor urged Nigerians to recognise the country’s journey to greatness, as evidenced by the developmental advances and economic creations seen throughout the country.
The governor was cited as stating, “Today, we celebrate an extraordinary Nigerian journey of 26 years, marked by transformation, growth, and the deepening of democracy,” by Humwashi Wonosoiku, the chief press secretary.
While he expressed sorrow that rights and ideals were being attacked, freedoms were being eroded, and civic space was shrinking, he also stated that polarisation was expanding and mistrust was increasing.
The governor praised Nigerians for fulfilling their sacred duty of protecting, preserving, and promoting the constitution. He thanked Adamawa’s voters for their tenacity during the 2023 elections, which has allowed the state to keep its reputation as a haven of peace and development.
“As patriots, you were tasked with a historic mission: ensuring that democracy was not undermined. You accomplished an excellent job, and your dedication has laid a firm basis for our state’s development, allowing us to continue our progress.”
Governor Fintiri noted that their sacrifice reminds him “that authority is a public trust to be exercised in a manner that brings full accountability to the people by whom, and for whom, we hold that authority.”
The governor, happy with the maturity of Nigeria’s democracy, told the people of Adamawa that the transition underway in all sectors would continue until his last day in office. “That is my solemn promise to our people.”
However, the governor warned that attempts to undermine the constitutional framework harm democracy, undermine the rule of law, and jeopardise our constitutional progress and nation. He urged Nigerians to continue developing a more inclusive, just, and equitable society for a brighter future.
