Govs, Defence Minister, NSA Hold Emergency Meeting Amid Security Challenges.
Governors from across Nigeria have assembled in Abuja for an emergency meeting of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), amid mounting worries about national security.
The meeting, held in the Forum’s office in Abuja, is attended by various state governors and deputy governors from all 36 states of the federation.
Although the official agenda for the meeting has not been released, the attendance of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, strongly suggests that serious security matters are at the forefront of the discussions.
The emergency session comes at a time when there is increased insecurity in numerous parts of the country, prompting requests for both federal and state authorities to work together.
Meanwhile, the Progressive Governors’ Forum is encouraging state governors to deploy community policing as President Bola Tinubu addresses the nation’s security concerns.
The chairman of the forum and governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, told journalists in Abuja after a three-hour meeting behind closed doors that the governors are equally studying the subject of state police, as proposed by Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State.
Governor Uzodimma stated that the forum will continue to support President Tinubu in addressing the nation’s security concerns.
During Tinubu’s visit to Benue, Alia stated, “Let me also restate my strong support for the establishment of state police as a long-term solution to the persistent insecurity in our state and possibly elsewhere.
“While I acknowledge the concerns surrounding its implementation, I believe the federal government can address these by setting clear state-specific guidelines and regulatory frameworks to prevent any potential misuse.”
