Kebbi Government Proposes Death Penalty for Bandit Informants

Following repeated attacks by armed bandits in portions of Kebbi, the state government has announced measures to revise current legislation to impose the death penalty or life imprisonment on convicted informants who assist criminals.

Governor Nasiru Idris announced this on Tuesday during condolence visits to Tadurga village in Zuru and Kyebu in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Areas, which were recently targeted by bandits in attacks that killed 30 people.

Governor Idris described informants as “deadly to society,” reaffirming his administration’s zero-tolerance policy toward insecurity and promising to take the issue seriously.

To increase security, the governor disclosed that plans had been made to build a military operational facility in the Zuru Emirate. He further stated that armored personnel carriers (APCs) and other critical security equipment had already been dispatched from Abuja to the state.

The governor expressed his grief over the unfortunate loss of lives and prayed for the victims, asking Allah to bless the deceased Aljannah Firdausi and grant a speedy recovery to those injured.

“We are here to see things for ourselves, commiserate with you, and reassure you of the urgent steps we have taken to improve security,” he told the locals.

Governor Idris also described the government’s security initiatives, including the purchase of 80 Hilux vehicles for security officers, 1,500 motorcycles for vigilantes, and higher pay for operatives stationed in high-risk regions.

He warned the people not to politicize security concerns or share false material on social media, as such activities could undermine ongoing efforts to restore calm.

In their comments, the chiefs of Danko, Ibrahim Al’aji, and Dabai, Suleiman Sami, commended the governor for his prompt action and requested increased security measures, particularly along routes frequented by bandits into neighboring states.

The Emir of Zuru, Rtd. Major General Sani Sami, thanked the governor for his visit and reiterated his commitment to the emirate’s security.
