Akume Remains SGF, Says Presidency
The presidency announced on Saturday night that former Benue State Governor George Akume would remain Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).
There were speculations that Akume resigned as SGF to become National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
However, in a statement, presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga stated that “there has been no change in Akume’s status”.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is currently in Saint Lucia, has made no new appointments.”
“The information circulating about Akume’s replacement is untrue,” he told reporters.
On Friday, June 27, 2025, former Kano State governor Abdullahi Ganduje resigned as APC National Chairman, allowing the party’s Deputy National Chairman (North), Ali Bukar Dalori, to take control.
Although APC spokesman Felix Morka stated that Ganduje resigned to address urgent personal matters, there are signs that he stepped down due to growing opposition within the party, particularly from members who saw his appointment as a violation of the party’s internal zoning arrangements.
Dalori, from the North East, will occupy the position of Acting National Chairman while the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meets promptly to fill the void caused by the resignation.
Ganduje, from the North-West zone, took over leadership of the party in August 2023, following the resignation of his predecessor, Abdullahi Adamu, from the North Central zone.
Ganduje was Kano’s governor from May 2015 to May 2023.
Tinubu named him as the Board Chairman of Nigeria’s Federal Airports Authority (FAAN) in January 2025.
