Obi Free to Run as Labour Party’s 2027 Presidential Candidate With or Without Me – Datti Baba-Ahmed

The 2023 vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Datti Baba-Ahmed, has declared that former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, is free to contest the 2027 presidential election on the platform of the Labour Party, with or without him as a running mate.

Baba-Ahmed made this known on Wednesday, affirming his continued respect for Obi and support for his political ambitions.

“There are two key individuals I have tremendous respect for; one of them is Peter Obi. I welcome him openly,” he said.

“The Labour Party welcomes him to retain the party’s ticket and contest in 2027 — with or without me. And the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is welcome to adopt a southern candidate.”

He emphasized the need for competent leadership in Nigeria, stating, “We want capacity. We want compassion. We want people who will develop Nigeria — leaders that matter, leaders that deliver on promises, not those who promise governance and deliver disaster.”

Addressing Obi’s involvement with the coalition on the platform of the ADC, Baba-Ahmed clarified that it should not be seen as an act of disloyalty to the Labour Party.

“This is not an anti-party activity. It is an unfolding situation. A coalition means political parties, interest groups, and individuals are coming together. It’s a developing process,” he explained.

“I have attended coalition meetings. Peter Obi is welcome to continue attending those coalition meetings as well.”

On the contentious issue of zoning ahead of the 2027 presidential race, Baba-Ahmed expressed support for the presidency to return to the South.
