FG Shuts Down 22 Illegal Tertiary Institutions
The National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) has uncovered and shut down 22 illegal Colleges of Education operating across Nigeria.
The discovery was made during a recent crackdown on unaccredited institutions across the country. Details of the action were included in a report on the commission’s recent achievements, obtained by our correspondent.
“The NCCE identified and shut down 22 illegal Colleges of Education operating across the country. In addition, it conducted a personnel audit and financial monitoring in all 21 federal colleges of education,” the report stated.
President Bola Tinubu had earlier directed key education regulatory agencies—the National Universities Commission (NUC), the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), and the NCCE—to take decisive action against illegal higher institutions.
Speaking at the 14th convocation ceremony of the National Open University of Nigeria in Abuja, President Tinubu, represented by the Director of University Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, Rakiya Ilyasu, emphasized the need to safeguard the integrity of Nigeria’s education system.
“At this juncture, it has become imperative to reiterate that this administration remains committed to strengthening coordination among all educational agencies to enhance efficiency and quality,” he said.
The President added, “The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), the NUC, NBTE, and NCCE are working collaboratively to improve education standards and ensure that cases of forgery and unrecognized institutions, both within and outside the country, are eliminated from our education ecosystem.”
