FUAMB Holds Maiden Vegetable Field Day, Harvests Over 105.5 Kilograms of Vegetables

The Federal University of Agriculture, Mubi (FUAM), has marked a significant milestone with the successful hosting of its maiden Vegetable Field Day, celebrating the harvest of over 105.5 kilograms of assorted vegetables from its demonstration farm.

The event, organized by the Department of Crop Science, highlighted FUAM’s commitment to practical agricultural education and its growing role in strengthening national food security.

The university’s demonstration farm, designed for hands-on training and research, produced high-quality crops including maize, cabbage, tomatoes, and cucumbers. The varieties are noted for their disease resistance, long shelf life, and superior yield, setting them apart from those commonly found in local markets.

Speaking at the event, Mrs. Fatima Bashir, Registrar of FUAM, reaffirmed the university’s dedication to advancing agricultural research, education, and innovation as key drivers of economic development and sustainability.

Representing the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Bitrus Dawi Tarfa, the Acting Vice Chancellor and Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Bamidele Zira, described the event as a reflection of the university’s core mission.

“This initiative demonstrates our commitment to achieving food security, improving nutrition, empowering communities through agribusiness, and promoting environmental sustainability,” he said.

The Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. Jesse Silas Mshelia, announced plans to establish a large-scale shea butter plantation to promote modern farming techniques and boost local economic activity.

The field day drew students, stakeholders, and community members, who toured the farm to witness the university’s agricultural innovations firsthand.

Through ongoing research and outreach, FUAM is helping local farmers adopt climate-resilient practices, reduce post-harvest losses, and improve their livelihoods.

As agriculture remains vital to Nigeria’s future, FUAM continues to lead by example—demonstrating how education and innovation can transform rural communities and strengthen food systems nationwide.
