Adamawa govt cancels crossover night activities over security concerns

The Adamawa State Government has cancelled all activities scheduled for the annual Cross Over Night celebration at the Unity Fly-Over in Jimeta, Yola, citing credible intelligence reports with serious security implications.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the chief press secretary to the governor, Humwashi Wonosoiku,  the government said the decision affects all events planned for the night of December 31, 2025 through the early hours of January 1, 2026. According to the government, the move was taken as a precautionary measure to safeguard lives and property, stressing that public safety remains its highest priority.

The statement explained that the cancellation followed security assessments and intelligence briefings that raised concerns about potential threats around the proposed venue. As a result, authorities deemed it necessary to halt the planned gatherings at the Unity Fly-Over to forestall any possible breach of peace or threat to residents.

The state government assured citizens that it is working closely with security agencies to maintain peace and stability across Adamawa. It noted that security operatives have been placed on alert and are intensifying surveillance and patrols in strategic locations, particularly within the state capital.

Residents, especially those in Yola North and Yola South Local Government Areas, were urged to remain vigilant and avoid crowded places during the period. The government also advised members of the public to promptly report any suspicious movements or activities to security agencies to enable swift response.

While acknowledging that the cancellation may inconvenience residents, religious groups, and event organisers, the government said the decision was taken in the overall interest of public safety. It added that preventive actions remain the most effective way to avert security challenges and protect communities.

The government further assured residents that the situation is being closely monitored and that additional information will be made available as necessary.
