US National Prayer Breakfast: Trump singles out Nigeria’s first lady for praise
Donald Trump has praised Nigeria’s first lady, Oluremi Tinubu, describing her as a “very respected woman” during the annual National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, DC.
Speaking at the faith-based event, which brings together political and civic leaders from the United States and abroad, the US president acknowledged Tinubu’s presence among international guests, prompting applause from the audience.
Trump referred to the Nigerian first lady’s religious background, noting her role as a Christian pastor in one of Nigeria’s largest churches.
“We are honoured to be joined today by the first lady of Nigeria, who also happens to serve as a Christian pastor at the largest church in Nigeria — a very respected woman,” Trump said. “Thank you very much. It’s a great honour, a very respected person too.”
Tinubu, a former Nigerian senator, is married to President Bola Tinubu, who took office in May 2023. In Nigeria, the role of first lady is informal but often carries significant political and social influence.
The National Prayer Breakfast, held every February, is attended by members of the US Congress, religious leaders and invited guests from around the world. The event focuses on prayer and reflection on leadership, governance and public service.
