Tinubu commends Fintiri’s leadership, backs Adamawa development drive
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has praised the governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, describing his administration as “focused and people-centred” during a high-profile visit to the north-eastern state.
Tinubu, who was received by senior government officials, lawmakers and traditional rulers, said the state’s recent investments in roads, schools and public institutions demonstrated “clarity of purpose” and a willingness to align with the federal government’s economic reform programme.
Speaking at a civic reception in the state capital, the president said subnational governments had a crucial role to play in stabilising the economy and improving service delivery.
“Development is a shared responsibility,” Tinubu said. “When states take bold steps to expand infrastructure and improve governance, the federal government stands ready to support such efforts.”
The visit comes amid continuing debate over the administration’s sweeping economic reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies and foreign exchange adjustments. While the policies have been defended by the presidency as necessary to restore fiscal balance, they have also drawn criticism over rising living costs.
Fintiri, in his remarks, said his government would sustain investment in critical infrastructure while strengthening internally generated revenue. He described the president’s visit as a sign of constructive engagement between Abuja and the states.
“Our commitment remains to inclusive growth and social stability,” the governor said. “We will continue to work with the federal government in the interest of our people.”
Large crowds lined parts of the city to welcome the president’s convoy, in what local officials described as a show of solidarity. Political analysts said the optics of the visit underscored efforts by the presidency to consolidate support across party and regional lines.
Tinubu’s public commendation of Fintiri signals an emphasis on intergovernmental cooperation at a time when economic pressures and security concerns continue to test governance across several states.
