I will never gag the press, says Gov. Akeredolu

Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State, has said that he would never at any point in time gag members of the Nigeria Union of Journalist (NUJ) from performing their civic responsibilities.

Akeredolu made this vow on Tuesday in Akure at the opening ceremony and investiture of grand patron and royal patron of the 2019 press week of the state council of NUJ in Akure.

The governor, who was inaugurated the grand patron of NUJ in the state said, “once you are in government, you should expect it; there will be attacks”.

Akeredolu said his objective was to improve on the good work he was doing, and that he had at no time looked into the activities of the state media-owned organisations.

The governor said that the opposition parties had also been allowed to ventillate their views on different programmes on the state owned media organisations.

“I’m delighted to be here. It is your day, I think you should be happy. NUJ in Ondo State has endeared itself to the people of the state,” he said.

Akeredolu also said that journalists were important to the progress of any democratic setting, and had been engendering unity in the country.

The royal patron of the union, Oba Adefarakanmi Agbede, the Olowa of Igbara-Oke kingdom said he would always be available to guide the union as a father.

The monarch urged members of the union to continue to fight for the freedom of speech in the country.

The chairman of the state council of NUJ, Ondo State, Mr Adetona Aderoboye, said the awards were devoid of any political colouration.

Aderoboye lauded the governor for appointing members of the union in the state media team.

He reiterated the call for a permanent secretary position for deserving journalists in the state civil service.
