“Remain calm,” Fintiri advises Adamawa residents in the face of extrajudicial killings.

Umaru Fintiri, the Governor of Adamawa State, has urged residents to remain calm in the aftermath of Maryamu’s extrajudicial killing by a police officer.

The governor urged people to avoid violence, arson, and rioting in a statement signed by his chief press secretary, Humwashi Wonosoiku, on Saturday.

While Maryam Abdullahi, also known as Yerbure, was killed by a stray bullet at home, Arafat was shot in the chest and survived.

The incident occurred around 9:45 p.m. on Thursday night at Doubeli Station, when police attached to the station attempted to make an arrest, which was resisted by the suspects. This elicited an unfavourable reaction from enraged youth, who attacked the Doubeli Police Station.

Governor Fintiri called the shooting “one of the darkest hours in our people’s history.”
The Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, who strongly condemned the assassination of a citizen, urged all social actors to avoid violence and lawlessness.

“I have requested an investigation into the rules of engagement used by the police officers who were deployed for the specific raid.

On Saturday, the governor expressed his sadness and “deep concern” about what had occurred.”
The Nigeria Police Adamawa Command had promised to investigate the incident’s remote cause and unravel the circumstances surrounding it as soon as possible.

While expressing condolences to the deceased’s family and friends, Governor Fintiri assured the police of the government’s full support and cooperation in their investigation to determine the remote and immediate cause of the mishap.

“I would also urge residents to remain calm and refrain from taking the law into their own hands in this matter; the state government will fulfil its responsibilities of ensuring that the right thing is done.”
He stated that the government’s hard-earned prosperity must not be jeopardised, but that “we all must work together to sustain it for democracy to thrive.”
