Chad’s Junta-Nominated Prime Minister Says He Will Run for President.

Just eight days after President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno announced his nomination, the prime minister of Chad, who was chosen by the junta, declared on Sunday that he, too, would run for president on May 6.

This year, Succes Masra, a former opposition leader who had gone into exile, became prime minister after signing a peace agreement with Deby Itno.

His opponents claim he is using his candidature to create the illusion of diversity in an election that the junta commander would easily win because his biggest opponents are either dead or in exile.

With the stated goal of “healing hearts and uniting the people,” 40-year-old Masra revealed his intention to run for office at a campaign gathering that was attended by hundreds of Transformers party activists.

Masra defended “an accord of the brave” that ensured “our quest for justice is never transformed into a drive for retribution.” in response to opponents who disapproved of his decision to cooperate with the junta.
