Running Four Government Budgets at Once: Certain Way to Go Broke – Peter Obi
Peter Obi, a presidential candidate for the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, has warned that the Nigerian government is heading straight into anarchy, uncertainty, and disaster due to its plan to implement four national budgets at once.
Obi criticised the move as an outrageous rejection of budgetary discipline, openness, and accountability in a Saturday post on his X handle.
Furthermore, the ex-governor of Anambra State warned that the government’s move would cause unnecessary spending in authorised budgets to compete with vital initiatives for scarce funds, making life even worse for the Nigerian people.
“The Nigerian government is implementing four national budgets concurrently,” he said, using all the information that is available. Fiscal responsibility, transparency, and accountability are completely disregarded in this case.
Further anarchy, disarray, and disaster are the results.
The approved budgets would have unnecessary spending compete with important projects for scarce funds, making the Nigerian people’s misery even worse. This is an act of willful irresponsibility.
It shows that our officials aren’t up to speed on reality and can’t handle the country’s budget.
We are violating one of the cornerstones of democracy when our elected officials knowingly engage in such monetary irresponsibility. Responsible and methodical management of public funds is a key responsibility of the leaders we elect.
“I humbly request—no, demand—that this situation be reversed immediately so that we can adopt a more accountable and open method of budgeting.
The demands of the Nigerian people, and not those of an elite few, must take precedence.
This is a rallying cry for all government officials to stop doing things that will throw the economy into even more disarray.
The National Assembly and the executive branch are completely without justification for endorsing or allowing such unethical activity.
Government officials that are thrifty and conscientious with taxpayer dollars are what we seek and demand.
“This is our sole hope for creating a strong nation.”
