President Tinubu chairs first Council of State meeting.
President Bola Tinubu presided over the National Council of State meeting.
Former Presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari are present during the meeting, which is held in the Council Chamber of the State House in Abuja.
Former heads of state, Generals Gowon Yakubu and Abdulsalami Abubakar, have joined electronically.
The meeting was also attended by the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akpabio, and the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila.
Governors Saminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, Hope Uzodinma of Imo State, Prof. Babagana Zulum of Borno State, Engr. Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State, Uba Sani of Kaduna State, Nasir Idris of Kebbi State, Usman Ododo of Kogi State, Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State, Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, Abba Yusuf of Kano State, Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State, and Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State
Governors Alex Otti of Abia State, Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State, and Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State participated electronically, while the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, came in person.
Former Chief Justices Alfa Belgore and Mahmud Muhammed are also present.
Others in attendance were Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of Economy, and David Umahi, Minister of Works.
The National Council of States has had its first meeting since President Tinubu took office in May 2023.
The conference comes just days after the EndBadGovernance rally, in which many Nigerians came to the streets to demand good government in the face of economic hardship caused by subsidy cuts and rising living costs.
The National Council of States is a key government body that advises the executive branch on policy. It also serves as a consent mechanism.
