Governor Fintiri outlaws Scavengers in Adamawa

The Governor of Adamawa State, the Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri CON, has taken decisive action by signing an Executive Order to prohibit scavenging practices in the state.

In a statement released by the Chief Press Secretary of the governor, Humwashi Wonosoiku, it was announced that the order will be implemented starting on Wednesday, August 14, 2024. This order will be in effect across all 21 local government areas of Adamawa State until further notice.

Scavengers, also known as “Baban Bola” in Hausa, pose a potential threat to the environment.

The warning emphasises that engaging in scavenging is considered a criminal offence and will result in arrest and prosecution. The state grants its security personnel the power to conduct searches and make arrests of individuals who refuse to comply with this directive.

It is emphasised in the Order that individuals who violate the provisions outlined in Sections 5(2) and (3) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended, and the Adamawa State Penal Code Law, 2018, will face prosecution.

Failure to comply with this directive is considered a violation and may result in a six-month imprisonment. A possible penalty for the offence could be a fine of N100,000 or a combination of other consequences.

“This Executive Order serves as a strong message to all individuals engaged in scavenging and related activities.

The Adamawa State Government is committed to ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of its inhabitants and will not hesitate to take swift and resolute action against anyone who puts them at risk.

“It is important for all citizens to collaborate with the government in order to maintain a clean and healthy environment.” The governor said.
