Ogun APC backs Tinubu for 2027, names Adeola consensus governorship candidate

The Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has endorsed Bola Tinubu for a second term in 2027 and adopted Solomon Olamilekan Adeola as its consensus governorship candidate.

The decision was reached at a strategic caucus meeting held on Monday at the party’s state secretariat, attended by the governor, Dapo Abiodun, his deputy, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, and other senior figures.

Abiodun, who leads the party in the state, said the move was intended to present a united front ahead of the 2027 elections and to address what he described as a long-standing imbalance in the state’s political leadership.

He said the adoption of Adeola, who represents Ogun West in the Senate, was part of a broader effort to ensure the senatorial district produces a governor for the first time since the state’s creation.

“Nothing will give me more joy than to break the 50-year-old jinx,” Abiodun said, adding that consultations had been held with key stakeholders and rival aspirants to secure consensus.

According to the governor, leading contenders from Ogun West, including Biodun Akinlade and Gboyega Isiaka, had agreed to support a single candidate in the interest of party unity.

He disclosed that discussions over the succession plan began about six months ago and included input from the president, who, he said, expressed interest in the choice of a candidate in the state.

Abiodun said he made a case for Ogun West when consulted, citing the district’s historical exclusion from the governorship position. He added that the eventual choice of Adeola was based on competence, political capacity and broader acceptability within the party.

The governor also stressed the importance of financial strength in contesting elections, noting that aspirants must be able to sustain their campaigns rather than rely entirely on external support.

Adeola, in his acceptance speech, thanked party leaders for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to justify the endorsement.

The meeting was attended by prominent party figures, including former governors Olusegun Osoba and Ibikunle Amosun, as well as serving and former lawmakers, party executives and other stakeholders.
