I mourn for Nigerian democracy; Governor Fintiri hits back at APC.
The governor of Adamawa State and the chairman of the People’s Democratic Party campaign council in Edo State have both expressed concern about Nigerian democracy, describing the just ended governorship votes in Edo as a sort of brigandage.
In a press statement issued this Sunday, the governor expressed concern about INEC’s unjustified suspension of collation and accused the electoral body of declaring a few local government results collated at the council level and moving the rest to INEC headquarters in Benin, the state capital, which the governor described as unacceptable.
The APC accused the governor of overstepping INEC’s powers. The governor denied the accusation, saying that he was only repeating the results that the electoral commission had previously announced at the local government collation centres.
In a Twitter message, Fintiri accused the APC of destroying democracy with their actions, calling the election a fraud.
See the goverbnor’s tweet below.
“After witnessing the shameful Edo gubernatorial poll, I weep for Nigeria’s democracy.” The APC’s desperate attempts to undermine me by falsely alleging that I released results will not detract from the true issue.
I merely posted the findings from INEC’s Irev webpage, which were compiled from several local government areas. What is truly disgraceful is the APC’s national chairman travelling into Edo on election day on a private plane, breaking movement restrictions, while their governors utilised armoured escorts to frighten voters. This brazen disdain for democratic norms is quite astounding.
Nigerians are upset, accusing INEC of compromising and supporting the APC. The reported vote-buying, disruption of collation systems, and questionable results with more votes than accredited voters all erode trust in our democracy. Indeed, democracy is under assault. We must condemn the rape of democracy and demand accountability. The world is watching, and Nigeria deserves better.
