Independence Day celebration: Adamawa Governor Pardons 2 Inmates
As part of Adamawa State’s Independence Day celebrations, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri pardoned two inmates at the state’s Correctional Centre today.
Humwashi Wonosoiku, the governor’s chief press secretary, said in a statement that the Adamawa State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy had recommended the detainees’ release.
The governor’s actions were consistent with the authority assigned to him by Section 212 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.
He added that the goal was to relieve overcrowding in Nigeria’s correctional service facilities.
While admonishing the freed inmates to be decent citizens as they transition from jail to society, the governor urged them to apply the skills they learnt while in custody to better themselves.
“Give your society the very best; don’t take any aspects of life for granted.” “Demonstrate your newness in your society,” he stated.
Fintiri went on to say that the act of mercy was motivated by his administration’s commitment to provide the best for the state’s residents, despite his concerns that the majority of the detainees were relatively young and should not be near the jail.
