NiMET predicts high rainfall in May, June.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) predicts that high-intensity rainfall could result in flash floods in the country’s coastal cities between May and June 2025.

Festus Keyamo, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, made the disclosure while giving the annual climate prediction for 2025 in Abuja.

He also stated that rain is expected to be delayed in Plateau’s northern and central states, as well as parts of Kaduna, Niger, Benue, Nasarawa, Taraba, Adamawa, and Kwara.

While early beginning is forecast in the southern states of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Anambra, and parts of Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Lagos, Edo, Enugu, Imo, and Ebonyi. Forecasters forecast a normal onset across the rest of the country.

In addition, the rainy season is expected to conclude sooner than usual in areas of Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Jigawa, Plateau, Bauchi, Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Taraba, Niger, Kwara, Kogi, FCT, Ekiti, and Ondo.

The season is likely to expire later than usual in Kaduna, Nasarawa, Benue, Lagos, Kwara, Taraba, Oyo, Ogun, Cross River, Delta, Akwa Ibom, Ebonyi, Anambra, and Enugu states.

Furthermore, we predict temperatures across the country to be higher than the long-term average. In January, February, March, and May, most sections of the country are expected to have higher daytime and nighttime temperatures than the long-term average.

However, day and overnight temperatures in April are expected to be colder than normal, while most northern states will experience warmer-than-normal temperatures.

Keyamo concluded his lecture by advising anyone involved in rainfed agriculture and other rainfall-dependent enterprises to check the Seasonal Climate Change document for expected onset dates or contact the Nigerian Meteorological Agency for more information.
