Tinubu approves 65-year retirement age for doctors,healthcare workers.

President Bola Tinubu has authorised raising the retirement age for doctors and other healthcare professionals from 60 to 65 years.

Dr Mannir Bature, National Publicity Secretary of the Nigerian Medical Association, made the announcement in a statement released on Wednesday in Lagos.

Bature stated that the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate, has been directed to formally present the approval to the Council on Establishment via the Office of the Head of Service for finalisation.

He claimed Pate communicated the policy adjustment during a high-level meeting with NMA President Prof. Bala Audu and senior health-care stakeholders.

According to Bature, the conference was also attended by leaders from the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria, the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, and the Joint Health Sector Unions.

He stated that the discussions focused on advances achieved in the welfare of Nigeria’s doctors and other healthcare workers.

According to him, the coordinating minister confirmed that the arrears resulting from the revision of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure are ready for payment.

“The necessary funds have been secured, and disbursement to beneficiaries will commence soon,” he informed us.

According to Bature, President Tinubu has approved the rectification of consequential adjustments for both CONMESS and the Consolidated Health Salary Structure as a result of the new minimum wage’s implementation.

“The process to effect this correction is at an advanced stage, providing much-needed relief to doctors and other healthcare workers,” the minister added.

He stated that following a lengthy examination begun by the NMA, approval has been obtained for the implementation of new tariffs for healthcare service providers.

“This will particularly benefit members of the Association of Nigerian Private Medical Practitioners and Nurses (ANPMPN), ensuring better financial remuneration and sustainability for healthcare services nationwide,” according to him.

Bature stated that the Coordinating Minister thanked all stakeholders for their patience and teamwork, and reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to enhancing the welfare of all healthcare professionals.

According to Bature, Pate stressed the importance of collaboration in boosting Nigeria’s health system.

He stated that delegates at the meeting renewed their commitment to working together to lobby for the well-being of healthcare professionals and secure the full implementation of crucial reforms.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the NMA has advocated for raising the retirement age of health workers from 60 to 65 years old in order to alleviate brain drain, promote knowledge transfer, and ensure excellent healthcare delivery.

According to NAN, numerous health associations or unions have launched nationwide strikes due to the non-implementation of CONMESS and CONHESS for doctors and healthcare professionals.
