Kano Has Capacity to Sustain State Police, Governor Declares
Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has declared that the state is prepared for the establishment of state police, describing the initiative as a critical step towards strengthening security and safeguarding lives and property.
Yusuf made the declaration on Wednesday while inaugurating the Inter-Agencies Task Force on Drug Abuse and Trafficking at the Ante Chamber of the Government House in Kano.
According to a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the governor said a state police system would operate alongside the Nigeria Police Force to improve security across the state.
“The proposed State Police will complement, not compete with, the Nigeria Police Force. Both institutions share the responsibility of protecting lives and property and maintaining law and order,” Yusuf said.
He stressed the importance of stronger collaboration among security agencies, noting that coordinated efforts would enhance intelligence gathering, improve rapid response to security threats, and boost public confidence in law enforcement.
“These structures must operate as partners to strengthen intelligence gathering, improve rapid response, and build public confidence in law enforcement,” he added.
The governor expressed confidence that Kano possesses the institutional capacity, human resources, and political commitment required to establish and sustain a state police outfit once the necessary constitutional amendments are enacted.
“Kano State has the institutional capacity, human resources, and political will to establish and sustain State Police when the necessary constitutional frameworks are in place,” he said.
Yusuf reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting lawful initiatives aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture.
“We will support every legitimate initiative that strengthens Nigeria’s security architecture and creates a safer environment for citizens,” he said.
Speaking on the newly inaugurated task force, the governor said it underscored his administration’s determination to combat drug abuse and illicit trafficking through enhanced collaboration among security agencies and other stakeholders.
“This task force shows our commitment to addressing drug abuse and illicit trafficking through strong collaboration among security agencies and stakeholders,” he said.
He urged members of the task force to discharge their responsibilities with discipline, professionalism, and integrity, stressing that sustained cooperation among relevant agencies remains essential to winning the fight against drug abuse and related crimes.
“The fight against drug abuse requires sustained commitment, professionalism, and effective inter-agency cooperation,” Yusuf said.
