PDP Crisis: Youth Group Blames BoT on Party Scribe

Supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), united under the banner of the PDP Coalition Youth for Good Governance, have warned the party’s Board of Trustees against actions and statements that could exacerbate the party’s leadership problem.

They were particularly concerned about the board’s decision to direct the National Working Committee (NWC) to swear in Sunday Ude-Okoye as substantive National Secretary.

In a statement issued following an emergency meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, the PDP BoT endorsed the report of the Saminu Turaki SAN-led Committee, which investigated the court decision on the dispute over the position of national secretary.

Senator Adolphus Wabara, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, stated that the board acted on the declarative judgements of the Enugu High Court and the Court of Appeal, both of which recognised Ude-Okoye.

In response to the move, the PDP Coalition Youth for Good Governance claimed that the BoT should have waited for the legal process to be completely utilised before taking such a position.

Emmanuel Mba, Convener of the PDP Youth Coalition, stated during a news event in Abuja, “The Youth Coalition noted with regret how the problem has festered and is causing unprecedented ripples within the party.” Unfortunately, the party’s leadership has exacerbated the issue, jeopardising its cohesiveness.

The Youth Coalition resolved to support a peaceful resolution of the crisis by respecting the Court of Appeal order that granted a stay of execution for the Enugu Court of Appeal judgement.

Recognising Udeh-Okoye as the Party’s National Secretary may result in contempt of court.

“Be cautious in making pronouncements that will result in a breach of public peace and safety.”Allow courts to resolve conflicts by constitutional means without interference or bias.Respect for the rule of law and court decisions with competent jurisdiction.

The PDP requires peace to function as a legitimate opposition party and provide good administration for Nigerians. The majority of the BoT members’ tenures have expired (see to Section 32/4 of the party constitution).

The BoT’s opinion is advisory only, and any action or inaction by the BoT is null and void.

“The youths are sick of this meddling invader in BoT. If they do not settle this issue quickly, we will have to take over the party.”
