Atiku, Tinubu, and Obi should refrain from running for office in 2027-Okonkwo.
Kenneth Okonkwo, a former Labour Party (LP) member, has demanded President Bola Tinubu, Peter Obi, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to withdraw their candidature for the presidency in the next election.
Okonkwo served as a spokesman for the LP presidential campaign team for the 2023 general election, alongside Obi, who flew the party’s flag.
But two years later, the Nollywood actor-turned-politician has reversed his support for Obi, asking LP leaders Atiku and Tinubu to make way for other contenders in Nigeria’s next round of elections.
On Channels Television’s Politics Today, he stated that he still believes the trio should leave way for other contenders in the upcoming general election. He emphasised that in Nigeria, people will not give you their mandate if you treat it lightly.
“You must act decisively to secure it. Unfortunately, nature has bestowed upon us the burden of fighting for our mandate in Nigeria, not only winning elections,” Okonkwo stated on Tuesday.
The former LP chieftain stated that he cooperated with Obi during the 2023 election, but it is already in the past.
“I still believe that. Whatever happened in 2023 should stay in 2023,” the actor remarked, declining to support the former Anambra State governor in Nigeria’s upcoming general election.
Okonkwo had an important part in the Labour Party, which controlled the last election. Obi finished third in that election, with almost six million votes, and the majority of his supporters were young people.
However, Okonkwo resigned from the Labour Party on Tuesday, citing internal disagreements.
The former member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has ruled out rejoining the ruling party.
“I resigned [to leave the APC] on principle,” Okonkwo insisted, but offered only one condition for returning to the party.
“Let me tell you, I will be the first to admit if the APC changes today and does well for Nigeria,” he stated, accusing the ruling party of failing to handle the country’s issues.
