Court grants ex-NHIS boss Yusuf ₦5 million bail for alleged ₦90m fraud.

Justice Chinyere Nwecheonwu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Kuje, Abuja, has granted bail to former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme, Usman Yusuf, in the amount of ₦5 million with two sureties.

While delivering the bail terms, Justice Nwecheonwu stated that the two sureties must give proof of their means of livelihood, whether business or civil service, as well as valid identification, and their addresses will be checked by the prosecution or court staff.

Although the case was previously scheduled for April 3, it was postponed owing to the Sallah break, which falls within that time.

The court then set the trial date for May 15, 2025.

Yusuf is charged with five counts of fraud totaling ₦90,439,178.

He is accused of abusing his position to get unfair advantages between 2016 and 2017. The charges also include allegations that contracts were awarded without following normal procurement processes.

Yusuf is accused of purchasing a vehicle for ₦49,197,750, which exceeded the allotted sum of ₦30,000,000.

He allegedly awarded a ₦10.1 million training contract to a nonprofit affiliated with him, but only half of the intended beneficiaries participated.

Yusuf is accused of handing a ₦17.5 million media consultancy contract to a company owned by his nephew, violating procurement norms.

Yusuf was arraigned by the EFCC on February 3, 2025. He pleaded not guilty to all five counts after the charges were read to him.
