Rivers Assembly issues arrest warrant for RSIEC chairman, four commissioners.

The Rivers State House of Assembly has issued an arrest warrant for the Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Justice Adolphus Enebeli (Retd.), and four other commissioners for failing to appear before the assembly.

A 72-hour deadline to appear on Monday prompted the issue of the warrant. The extension occurred after an initial 48-hour deadline that passed last Friday.

During Monday’s plenary session, Speaker Martin Amaewhule and the House unanimously authorised the warrant, underlining their call for accountability from RSIEC officials.

Earlier on Monday, Ibiemebo Evelyn Thompson, the RSIEC Commissioner in Charge of Transport, Logistics, and Store, resigned, citing a recent Supreme Court order that annulled the state’s local government elections on October 5, 2024.

Her departure follows that of two other commissioners, Lazberry Nnah and Professor Simeon Weli, who resigned last week for similar reasons.

With the RSIEC Chairman, Justice Enebeli, yet to answer to the Assembly’s summons, it is unknown what his future steps will be.
