Awujale’s Blessings Instrumental to My Electoral Victory — Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu on Sunday credited the blessings of the late Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, as instrumental to his emergence as president in the 2023 general election.

Tinubu made the remarks during the 8-day Fidau prayers held in honour of the late monarch, where he joined members of the royal family, dignitaries, and other well-wishers to pay tribute.

Describing the late Awujale as a moral compass and visionary leader, Tinubu praised the monarch’s contributions to the socio-economic and political development of Yorubaland and Nigeria at large.

He recalled with fondness the pivotal role the Awujale played in the struggle for the revalidation of the annulled June 12, 1993, presidential election, won by the late business mogul, Chief Moshood Abiola.

“Baba was steadfast, resolute, and always encouraging. Institutions have been named after him, and his legacy will endure. It’s now up to us to uphold the culture and values he represented,” Tinubu said.

Reflecting on his presidential journey, the president added, “Our history would have been incomplete if I had failed in the last election. My victory was made possible through the support and blessings of the late Awujale. I went to him, and he blessed me, saying I would win. I’m extremely proud of him—he was always there for all of us in times of need.”

Tinubu also called on the people of Ijebuland and Nigerians at large to remain united and uphold the legacy of unity, integrity, and service that the late monarch championed.

He thanked Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun for his care and commitment to the late king, whom he described as a father figure, a leader of conscience, tradition, and enduring value.

In his tribute, Governor Abiodun described the late Awujale as more than a traditional ruler—he was a voice for the voiceless and a revered patriarch whose legacy will resonate through time.

“Baba was a man of exceptional intellect and rare integrity. Even before ascending the throne, his brilliance and forthrightness stood out,” the governor said.

“He redefined traditional leadership, turning the Awujale institution into a dynamic platform for good governance, national dialogue, and moral guidance. Under his reign, Ijebuland experienced unprecedented progress. He bridged our past and our future.

“Kabiyesi upheld the dignity of Ijebu culture while embracing modern values. He was both a custodian of tradition and a defender of progress. His reign brought peace, prosperity, and prestige to our land, earning him global respect.”

The Fidau prayer event, held at the Dipo Dina Stadium in Ijebu-Ode, was attended by serving and former governors, members of the Federal Executive Council, lawmakers, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and captains of industry, among others.
