Coalition: Information Shows Obi May Return to PDP, Seek Presidential Ticket — Ali Modu Sheriff
Former Borno State governor, Ali Modu Sheriff, has suggested that the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, may return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi, who recently joined several prominent opposition politicians in forming a coalition under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has expressed interest in contesting the 2027 presidential election. The coalition’s stated goal is to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
There are growing speculations that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is also preparing to contest for the PDP ticket once again, setting the stage for what could be a high-stakes internal battle within the opposition.
In an interview with a journalist, Sheriff revealed that information available to him indicates Obi may soon return to the PDP with the aim of securing the party’s presidential nomination.
“Atiku has been the vice president of Nigeria. So for him, it’s president or nothing. Peter Obi ran under the Labour Party. His ambition is to become President,” Sheriff stated.
“Information available to me is that any moment from now, Obi would go back to the PDP and run as a presidential candidate under the PDP.
“So that leaves Vice President Atiku and (Rotimi) Amaechi. So tell me, which states do they control?”
Obi’s potential return to the PDP would significantly alter the dynamics of the 2027 race, particularly within the opposition, as stakeholders weigh their options in forming a viable challenge to the APC’s dominance.
