Tinubu Orders Immediate Launch of Free Healthcare for Low-Income Retirees

President Bola Tinubu has directed the immediate implementation of a free healthcare initiative for low-income retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), describing it as a vital pillar of social protection and dignity in retirement.

The directive was announced in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, the President gave the order after receiving a briefing from the Director General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), Omolola Oloworaran.

President Tinubu also instructed relevant agencies to fast-track the implementation of long-overdue pension increases and the introduction of a minimum pension guarantee. The measure, he said, would serve as a critical safety net for the most vulnerable pensioners enrolled under the CPS.

“President Tinubu further mandated the PenCom DG to urgently resolve the longstanding police pension issue, emphasising that members of the police force who serve and protect the nation deserve to retire with dignity and peace of mind,” the statement noted.

Oloworaran also briefed the President on efforts to preserve the value of pension fund assets amid rising inflation and other macroeconomic challenges. She disclosed plans to introduce foreign currency pension contributions to allow Nigerians in the diaspora to participate in the pension system.

President Tinubu expressed strong support for the proposed reforms, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to inclusive economic growth and greater social protection for ordinary Nigerians.

The briefing also highlighted several ongoing pension initiatives aimed at enhancing retiree welfare and expanding the reach of the CPS.
