Wike, PDP Leaders Meet in Abuja

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, is currently hosting key leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from across the country at his official residence in Abuja.

According to Wike, the meeting is intended to provide an opportunity to discuss the current state of the party and explore ways to move it forward.

Among the notable attendees are the PDP National Secretary, Sam Anyanwu; former Governors of Abia and Benue States, Okezie Ikpeazu and Samuel Ortom; the Minority Leader of the 10th Rivers State House of Assembly, Kingsley Chinda; the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly; and other members of the Assembly.

This meeting follows recent remarks by Wike, in which he warned that the PDP risks self-destruction if it attempts to bring former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi back into its ranks.

Speaking during a media chat on Monday, Wike said the party had not learned from the missteps that cost it dearly in the 2023 general elections. He recalled repeatedly warning that allowing both the presidential candidate and the national chairman to come from the North was politically unwise and unjust.

“From day one, I told my colleagues in the PDP, you’re shooting yourselves in the foot. If you allow this to continue, you’ll pay for it. And what did I say? You cannot have both the presidential candidate and the national chairman of the party from the same region,” Wike stated.

The former Rivers State governor accused the PDP of consolidating both positions in the North, ignoring calls for fairness and balance — a decision he believes contributed significantly to the party’s poor performance at the polls.
