Peter Obi Condemns Killing of Security Personnel, Calls It a Wake-Up Call for Nigerian Leader

The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over the increasing spate of attacks and killings targeting security personnel across Nigeria.

In a statement shared via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Tuesday, Obi described the violence against members of the armed forces, police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and local vigilante groups as both “tragic and unacceptable.”

The former Governor of Anambra State said the recurring incidents should serve as a wake-up call to Nigerian leaders to properly equip and motivate the country’s security forces.

“Over the past weeks, the country has been thrown into mourning once again due to the tragic killings of our security personnel — from our gallant soldiers and NSCDC officers to brave policemen and community vigilantes,” Obi wrote.

“Our men and women in uniform have paid the ultimate price in the line of duty, dedicating their lives to the safety and stability of our dear nation. These recurring killings must prompt us, as leaders, to take decisive action. We must prioritize security as the foundation of governance and ensure that those who defend us are properly equipped and supported.”

Obi emphasized that the sacrifices made by security operatives must not be taken for granted and that their families should not be left to suffer in silence.

“Nigeria cannot continue to bury its security personnel while their families are neglected. The government must ensure that the wives, children, and parents of these fallen heroes are adequately compensated and cared for. This is not an act of charity — it is a matter of justice. It is the least a grateful nation can do for those who laid down their lives for the rest of us,” he stated.

He concluded by praying for the repose of the souls of all fallen security personnel and for continued strength and comfort for their families.

“To every fallen hero, may your soul rest in perfect peace. Your sacrifice and patriotism will never be forgotten. And to the families left behind — you are not alone. May God continue to give you strength and comfort,” Obi added.
