Ex-Oyo Governor Rashidi Ladoja Becomes 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland
Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, witnessed a significant moment in its history on Thursday as former Governor Rashidi Ladoja was officially crowned the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.
The traditional rites began with the symbolic presentation of the Akoko leaf to Ladoja at the Labosinde Compound in Oja’ba. He was later formally crowned at the Ose Meji Temple in the Ibadan South-East Local Government Area.
A public presentation of the staff of office by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde is expected to take place at Mapo Hall in the coming days.
Ladoja’s ascension follows the passing of the 43rd Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who died on July 7, 2025. His installation marks the continuation of a revered tradition that defines Ibadan’s royal succession, widely known for its structured and hierarchical system.
The coronation ceremony drew a large crowd of dignitaries, traditional rulers, political figures, and residents, many of whom were dressed in colorful traditional attire. Among those in attendance were the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade; the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Ọlaoye; former Ogun State governor Ibikunle Amosun; former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso; and former Osun State governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola. The Chief Imam of Ibadan also joined other clerics and community leaders in paying homage to the new monarch.
Security at the event was tight, with operatives from the Department of State Services (DSS) and personnel from the Nigerian Army deployed to ensure a peaceful and well-organized ceremony.
The Olubadan stool remains one of the most respected traditional institutions in Nigeria, not only for its cultural significance but also for its clear and methodical line of succession. With his new role, Oba Rashidi Ladoja now carries the responsibility of upholding the values, unity, and heritage of Ibadanland.
