PDP Northern Group Backs Jonathan for 2027, Reaffirms Support for Damagum
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Northern Support Group has declared unwavering support for former President Goodluck Jonathan as the party’s presidential candidate in the 2027 general election.
The group also reaffirmed its confidence in the leadership of Acting National Chairman Ambassador Iliya Umar Damagum, praising his reconciliation efforts aimed at restoring unity and discipline within the party.
The resolutions were contained in a communiqué issued after the group’s 8th Northern Support Group Meeting, held Wednesday and Thursday in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State. The meeting brought together PDP leaders and representatives from across the northern states to strategize for the 2027 elections.
Signed by Northern Coordinator Hon. Yusuf Abubakar and North-West Zonal Secretary Hon. Adamu Ahmed Narayi, the communiqué described Jonathan as a symbol of peace, unity, and progress, and urged party stakeholders to begin nationwide mobilization to ensure his emergence as the party’s flag bearer.
“There is no going back on Goodluck Jonathan as the candidate to redeem the party’s image in 2027,” the group said, lauding the former president’s peaceful handover of power in 2015 as evidence of his patriotism.
The group dismissed concerns over Jonathan’s eligibility to contest, saying the issue had long been resolved and should not be used as a political distraction.
It expressed concern over what it described as divisive actions by certain PDP leaders allegedly working against the party’s unity for selfish or external interests. The communiqué accused some National Working Committee members of collaborating with the ruling APC government and undermining reconciliation efforts.
The group also criticized Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, accusing him of destabilizing the PDP from within while serving in the APC-led administration.
It called on Damagum to enforce strict disciplinary measures against members whose conduct weakens the party’s structure or image, insisting that party supremacy must prevail over personal ambition.
The group reaffirmed the PDP’s enduring grassroots support across northern Nigeria and pledged loyalty to the party’s leadership, expressing confidence that the PDP can reclaim power in 2027 through unity and renewed commitment.
