SWAN Honors Kumangar With 2025 Distinguished Service Award Nomination
LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has nominated veteran sports administrator Solomon Kumangar for its 2025 Distinguished Service Award, recognizing his decades of dedication and contribution to sports development in Nigeria.
SWAN’s national awards committee announced the nomination on Tuesday following a meeting of its executive council in Abuja. The association described Kumangar’s selection as a tribute to his outstanding leadership, integrity, and unwavering commitment to the growth of grassroots and professional sports across the country.
According to the committee, Kumangar’s name was unanimously endorsed after a review of nominations submitted by state chapters and affiliate members. The award, it said, honors individuals who have demonstrated excellence, professionalism, and service that have positively impacted the sporting community.
In a statement, SWAN President Isaiah Benjamin said Kumangar’s recognition was well deserved, noting that his contributions to sports administration have spanned more than three decades.
“Solomon Kumangar has shown exceptional dedication to sports development, particularly in mentoring young athletes and promoting inclusive participation across various sporting disciplines,” Benjamin said. “His selfless service and passion for youth empowerment through sports reflect the true spirit of this award.”
Born in Adamawa State, Kumangar began his career as a journalist and sports officer before rising to prominence as a leading administrator. He has served in several capacities, including as a member of the National Sports Reform Committee and an adviser on sports policy at the state level.
Over the years, he has worked closely with sports associations, government agencies, and private partners to advance programs that enhance talent discovery and development. Colleagues describe him as a bridge-builder known for his integrity, discipline, and commitment to fairness.
The 2025 SWAN Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place in Abuja in December and will feature recognitions in multiple categories, including sports journalism, administration, and humanitarian service.
Kumangar, in a brief reaction, said he was humbled by the honor, describing it as “a motivation to continue contributing to the growth of Nigerian sports.”
“I dedicate this recognition to every sports journalist, athlete, and administrator working to make Nigeria proud,” he said.
