Northern governors back Tinubu on insecurity, push for reforms and revenue growth

Governors of the 19 northern states, under the auspices of the Northern States Governors’ Forum, have reaffirmed their support for Bola Ahmed Tinubu in efforts to tackle insecurity and accelerate development across the region.

The meeting, held at the Gombe State Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja, was chaired by Inuwa Yahaya, who signed the communiqué issued at the end of deliberations.

In the statement, the governors pledged sustained collaboration with the federal government and security agencies to confront evolving threats, stressing that restoring peace requires collective national backing.

“The Forum acknowledges and commends the unified efforts of member states in addressing the numerous security and developmental challenges facing the region, noting that these efforts are already producing positive outcomes,” the communiqué read.

The governors also called on Nigerians to support the armed forces and other security agencies, while reiterating their commitment to strengthening joint actions to consolidate recent gains.

Beyond security, the forum signalled a push for institutional reforms, including plans to digitise its secretariat to enhance coordination, efficiency and policy continuity.

On the economic front, the governors agreed to engage consultants to explore strategies for boosting internally generated revenue, with a focus on identifying and harnessing untapped taxable sources across the northern states.

They also resolved to sustain engagement with the Presidential Implementation Committee on Technology Transfer to advance the establishment of the New Nigeria Energy Company under the Sun Africa Project, aimed at improving energy capacity.

The renewed pledge comes against a backdrop of persistent insecurity across northern Nigeria, where banditry, kidnapping and insurgency continue to strain both state and federal responses.

In Kaduna state, at least 13 people were killed on Sunday when armed bandits attacked a wedding celebration in Kahir village, Kagarko local government area, with several others abducted and many injured.

In Plateau state, a separate shooting incident in Anguwan Rukuba, in Jos North local government area, reportedly left scores dead, underscoring the fragility of security in the region.

Northern governors have repeatedly called for deeper collaboration with security agencies and increased federal intervention, as communities grapple with recurring violence.

The administration of President Tinubu has maintained that security sector reforms and economic revitalisation remain central to its agenda, with a focus on strengthening national stability and improving revenue generation.
