NiMet forecasts thunderstorms, rainfall across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast cloudy weather, thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across several parts of Nigeria on Monday, August 24, 2026.

NiMet said patches of cloud would persist across the northern states during the morning, with thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall expected in the afternoon and evening.

In the North-Central region, cloudy conditions are expected in the morning, followed by isolated thunderstorms and moderate rainfall over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, Benue, Kogi, Niger and Plateau states later in the day.

Across the southern states, NiMet forecast cloudy skies in the morning, with chances of light rainfall over parts of Ebonyi, Enugu, Cross River and Akwa Ibom.

The agency said intermittent moderate rainfall was also expected over most parts of the southern region during the afternoon and evening.

NiMet advised residents to exercise caution, warning that strong winds could precede thunderstorms.

It urged people living in flood-prone and low-lying areas to remain alert and avoid driving or walking through flooded roads.

The agency also advised residents to disconnect electrical appliances during thunderstorms where necessary.

NiMet further urged airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather briefings from the agency to support safe flight planning.
