ACF urges Nigerians to hold leaders accountable ahead of 2027
The Arewa Consultative Forum has urged Nigerians to hold political leaders accountable for their performance, particularly in tackling insecurity, poverty and economic hardship, as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.
ACF chairman Mamman Osuman made the call in a message marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary, saying the country’s challenges required greater accountability from those entrusted with public office.
Osuman expressed concern over insecurity and its impact on communities, including the displacement of citizens, disruption of economic activities, closure of schools and destruction of livelihoods.
“Leadership is a sacred trust. Those entrusted with public authority must continually remember that they hold such positions in trust for the people and for the common good,” he said.
He said some of the difficulties confronting Nigerians had been perpetrated or aggravated by people entrusted with leadership, insisting that public office should serve the common good rather than personal interests.
Ahead of the 2027 elections, Osuman urged eligible Nigerians to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards and participate actively in the electoral process.
He advised voters to examine candidates’ records, policies and positions on issues affecting the country rather than make choices solely on the instructions of political parties.
“Our votes should be based on individual analysis, conscience, judgment and assessment of the candidates and the issues, rather than merely responding to the clarion calls or directives of any political party,” he said.
Osuman also warned against election-related violence, urging political actors and citizens, particularly young people, to exercise restraint before, during and after the polls.
“No political contest is worth the loss of a human life,” he said, calling on Nigerians to reject inflammatory rhetoric, provocation and destruction of lives and property.
The ACF chairman said differences in political opinion should not become grounds for hatred or violence.
He called for collective responsibility in securing Nigeria’s future, urging citizens and government to renew their commitment to peace, unity, justice, responsible citizenship, good governance and the dignity of every Nigerian.
